For our model, we used a refrigerator box that was shortened by approximately 1/3, although any large appliance box would work. Tip: Boxes with Distracting Text Tip: Directing Helpful Kid Energy
The box should also have a lid. It will help stabilize the cottage walls and prevent access from unwanted visitors flying in on brooms. The lid you have may have been secured with a metal band. This is unnecessary and should be discarded. Just tape the corners or use a glue gun. Tip: Boxes with No Lids
If you are going to paint the box, use only Tempra paint. We found large old paintbrushes work the best, as there is a lot of area to cover. Tempra paint dries quickly so you should be able to apply sheets almost immediately after painting. Tip: Why to Use Tempra Paint
To maximize your child's play activity, each side of the box should have an opening. For windows, apply the sheets to the box sides with curls of masking tape, then, using a knife, carefully poke through both layers of sheet and cardboard where indicated by the dotted line and continue by cutting out each opening.
Later, to secure them more permanently, you may want to use appropriate white glue. The hinged windows work best if you score the cardboard from the inside slightly. cut out and add the flower box under a window.
For the cottage door, centre the peaked doorframe at the desired height on the wall and tape in place. Cut across this sheet as indicated by the dotted line, and then straight down to the floor on one side. On the opposite side, slightly score the cardboard from under the door frame to the floor to provide the swinging action needed to open the door. To complete the door, add the hinges to the side that swings and the mailbox slot which will open by cutting along the dotted line. Tip: Making Straight Door Jambs
Everet and Everlene, our two brave folk heroes, and the grass strips can now be placed around the bottom as suggested in the photos. Tip: Using Grass to Maximum Effect
The chimney brickwork can now be cut out and folded to make a rectangle. To help it stand up better, it's best to stiffen it by gluing it to a piece of cardboard (we suggest a cereal box). Tape this in shape and place up on the roof.
The candy canes, gingerbread people and lollipops can be cut out and distributed around as desired.
The "working" clock (the moveable hands are on the sheet with the peaked door frame) and the picture of Everet's ancestor are two cutouts that can go inside. We used a brad fastener to allow the clock movement.
The extra brickwork can be used and any other artwork (drawings, pictures from magazines, etc.) added for the best fairy tale cottage ever, because after all, you built it!
