For our model, we used a refrigerator box that was shortened by approximately 1/3, although any large appliance box would work. Tip: Boxes with Distracting Text Tip: Directing Helpful Kid Energy
The box should also have a lid. It will help stabilize the theatre walls and prevent anyone from gate-crashing the performance. Some lids may have been secured with a metal band. This is unnecessary and should be discarded. Just tape the corners or use a glue gun. Tip: Boxes with No Lids
If you are going to paint the box, use only Tempra paint. We found large old paintbrushes work the best, as there is a lot of area to cover. Tempra paint dries quickly so you should be able to apply sheets almost immediately after painting. Tip: Why to Use Tempra Paint
The main stage is an opening 17" across x 15" high x 23" across the bottom. See figure A. This should allow approximately 4 1/2" on each side and the top depending on the size of box you have. Start by drawing a rectangle 26" wide x 15" high and approximately 4 1/2" down from the top of the box. Tip: How to Utilize the Box
The stage door and side stage openings can be cut out next by referring to figure B. The door dimensions are approximately 20 3/4" x 43 1/2". This should allow approximately 4 1/2" on each side and across the top. Tip: Door Hinge
Cut out and tape or glue the marquee sign to the piece of cardboard that was cut out fro the side stage. It will be necessary to make a base for the marquee to stand properly. Use the centre area to make your own sign to announce the next performance. The stage lighting can also go up now.
The two star performers, Everet and Everlene, as well as the other stick puppets and trees should be glued to a stiffer piece of cardboard. We suggest a cereal box, then hot glue or tape them to a length of doweling approximately 10" long. All of the costumes are designed to fit any of the different characters. Watch for more on our web site.
The dressing room sign can go inside.
If the box you are using came with corner stiffeners, reuse them at the door as this area has been weakened. We also found it necessary to prop the stage door open with a cardboard brace.
If desired, use other artwork (drawings, pictures from magazines, etc.) to complete the best puppet theatre ever, because after all, you built it!
